The study re-contacted 389 African American male participants in North Carolina previously enrolled as a supplemental minority cohort for the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). This was a cross-sectional study of serum concentrations of p,p'- DDE and self-reported exposure to DDT in African American men.
A follow-up questionnaire, specifically focusing on self-reported DDT exposure, other pesticide exposures, diseases, and other health conditions, was administered to all men agreeing to participate. These men were asked to donate a blood and urine sample and photographs of their head. In addition, anthropometric indices were measured.
Enrollment and follow-up questionnaire data, self reported indices to DDT and other pesticides, serum p,p'-DDE levels, self-reporting of major diseases and other health conditions, anthropometric measures, and hair patterning were analyzed on all men. Based on serum p,p'-DDE levels, blood samples were selected to test and assess the relationship between androgen and plasma lipid concentrations, and androgen levels and hair patterning.
